PhD School Astrophysics 2016

Astrophysical Probes of Fundamental Physics

A PhD School at University of Ferrara

(Department of Physics and Earth Science)

Ferrara, Italy, 5-9 September 2016

As part of the PhD program in Physics ("Dottorato di Ricerca in Fisica") at University of Ferrara, the Department of Physics and Earth Science organises a series of Lectures on advanced topics in astrophysics and fundamental physics, designed for PhD and Master students in Physics and Astronomy, as well as researchers with multi-disciplinary interests in high-energy astrophysics, astro-particle physics and cosmology.
The aim of this school of Astrophysics, the second in a series, is to provide participants with advanced knowledge on outstanding questions in fundamental physics which can be addressed in the field of astrophysics and cosmology. Lectures will cover:
  • recent developments in cosmology and astro-particle physics, including dark matter and dark energy
  • high-density matter and extreme physics, which can be probed with compact objects and high-energy transient phenomena, as well as gravitational waves
  • formation and demography of supermassive black holes in the early Universe and the mass spectrum of stellar-mass black holes, critical for gravitational wave astronomy
Lectures will blend theoretical and observational aspects on these topics.

Lecturers and topics:

Paolo Natoli (UniFE and INFN): Cosmic Microwave Background probes of fundamental physics
Carlo Burigana (IASF/BO): Upcoming cosmological surveys
Massimo Meneghetti
(INAF/BO): Probing Dark Matter with gravitational lensing
Piero Rosati (UniFE): Astrophysical probes of Dark Matter
Michela Mapelli (INAF/PD): Demography of stellar mass black holes
Giuseppe Pagliara
(UniFE): Astrophysical probes of high-density matter
Lorenzo Amati (IASF/BO), Cristiano Guidorzi (UniFE): High-energy transient phenomena
Roberto Gilli (INAF/BO): Supermassive black holes in the early Universe
Mauro Orlandini (IASF/BO): Statistical tools for high energy astrophysics
