SPIN WAVES IN FERROMAGNETIC SYSTEMS (Magnonic Crystals, Artificial Spin Ice, Film, Hybrid Structures)
Spin waves are collective oscillations of the electron spins around the direction of a magnetic field (internal of the material).
PECULIARITIES OF SPIN WAVES («Magnons» → «Magnonics» is their Science)
- «Quasi-particles», collective excitations emerging from complexity
- No charge motion → no Joule effect nor ohmic losses (dissipationless information carriers)
(topic: energy efficiency) - Moderate propagation speed (~km/s) → at GHz frequency (IT interest) they get nanometric wavelength
→ ideal information carriers in nanotechnology - By exploiting interference among different signals, they can attain logic operations («spin wave-logic devices»)
more recently: They can implement entanglement, possibly useful for quantum computing and quantum sensing.
