On behalf of the RISC-KIT project we are pleased to inform you that The First RISC-KIT Summer School will be held at Università degli Studi di Ferrara, Ferrara, Italy from 12-16 September 2016.

Course Outline*:

Day 1: Introduction to the RISC-KIT toolbox

Coastal Risk Assessment Framework (CRAF) Phase I - Identifying hotspots along a coastline.

Day 2: CRAF Phase II - Deepening our knowledge of hotspots on a smaller regional scale.

Day 3: Introduction for the RISC-KIT Web-based Managment Guide.

Day 4: Visit to Porto Garibaldi-Foce Renoon the Italian Adriatic coast.

Day 5: Applying RISC-KIT tools to assess coastal flood impacts, vulnerability and resilience of the Porto Garibaldi-Bellocchio field site.

*The provisional programme is liable to change. The final course programme will be available in April 2016.

Enrollment is open from 01 February 2016 until 6th May.

Course convenors will evaluate the applications and invite selected candidates to participate in the course. Selection will be made as well as the potential benefit the course will have for the candidate. Selected candidates will be notified by email after the enrollment closing date.

As places are limited, the convenors will select the candidates at their absolute discretion and no correspondence will be entered into. Certain candidates may be eligible to receive financial support. Further information on funding opportunities will be provided in the coming weeks.

Excursion to Porto Garibaldi – Foce Reno and Valli di Comacchio

The boat trip will start in Porto Garibaldi and we will sail along the coast towards the river Reno mouth. Then we will visit the “Valli di Comacchio”, their human activities and their natural features.

The coastal area of the Ferrara Province hosts a large number of natural and human settlements. The sketch of coast between Porto Garibaldi and the river Reno mouth consists of a touristic area in the north and a natural one in the south. Northern beaches are highly shaped by the human activities. Beach concessions’ owners regularly feed the beaches through sand nourishments and, during summer, tourists crowd together into them. On the other hand, natural beaches in the south, although affected by erosion, offer a more isolated and natural relaxing experience. The nearby Park also offers several hiking tracks in the pine forest.

The “Valli di Comacchio” extend from Comacchio to the river Reno. These natural wetlands historically accommodated various human activities carried out in harmony with a large flora and fauna biodiversity. Saltworks and fishery were, and are, important economic drivers of the area, along with the touristic ones that grew in the last decades. The Anguilla fishing and preparation in long-life can is one of the most important handcrafted traditions of the area. A large number of bird species and other animals attract international birdwatchers and scientist.
